Singing Black Holes and Music For The Bear | New Release New York 10.13.09

New Release New York 10.13.09

This Week: Singing Black Holes and Music For The Bear

Tuesday October 13
SINGING BLACK HOLES The Secret Science Club is talking about music from outer space this evening. Astrophysicist Janna Levin has an idea, summed up in this tidbit from the Secret Science blog: “When two spinning black holes orbit each other, engaging in an invisible pas de deux, they create gravitational waves—essentially ripples in the fabric of space-time—that cause the cosmos to ‘ring like a drum.’” We want to know what that sounds like.

The Bell House // 149 7th St, Brooklyn // 8p // free // more info // directions

Wednesday October 14
THE DODOS Just about a month ago, The Dodos, a great band from San Francisco, came out with Time To Die. Their first album since their breakthrough, Visiter, (and their third album overall). It sticks to their original formula of polyrhythmic drums, finger-picked guitar, full throated vocals and no bass, but it’s by no means stale. Their sound is clearer than ever, with real focus on thick, rich tones; and they’ve added vibraphone (we’re feeling the vibes) to the mix.

note. Just before we went to print, this show sold out. You can still catch The Dodos at the Williamsburg Music Hall the night before, Tuesday, October 13.

The Bowery Ballroom // 6 Delancey St, Manhattan // 8p // $15 in advance of $17 at the door // more info // directions

Thursday October 15
BONK! It’s a big get-together of marching brass bands from New York, Chicago, Seattle and even Rome. Hungry March Band, a group called the Pink Puffers (those are the Romans), and our favorite, The Stumblebum Brass Band, are all taking part. Starting with a big, secret location parade today and going all the way through Monday, they’ll be leading marches and pub crawls through the streets of Brooklyn and Manhattan, onto ferries, into New Jersey bowling alleys and who knows where else. Get out those shimmying jazz hands and drinking hats.

Check the BONK! website for the starting location of today’s parade // 6p // free // more info

Friday October 16
NO AGE SCORES THE BEAR The Bear is Jean-Jacques Annaud’s film about a young, orphaned grizzly who’s taken under the wing of an older male bear as they’re hunted through the wilds of British Columbia. We saw it when we were seven-years-old and still have vivid memories of its near dialogue-less scenes. Los Angeles lo-fi droners No Age have created their own score for the movie, and they’re performing it while it rolls in the New Museum’s theater.

The New Museum // 235 Bowery, Manhattan // 7p sharp // $20 // more info // directions

Saturday October 17
THE WURST RECORD RELEASE The joke never gets old, and the records continue to be great tone-setters for the dancefloor. The Wurst label has another jam up its sleeve with Neurotic Drum Band’s “Neurotic Erotic Adventure”, and to celebrate they’re throwing a party. Label boss My Cousin Roy is playing alongside Ulysses and John Selway, the two gents behind the drum band, and Selway’s friend Abe Duque, who only last made an appearance in New York at our Beach Party in August, is dropping in to play as well.

SubMercer // 147 and 1/2 Mercer St, Manhattan // 10p // free // more info // directions

Sunday October 18
BLACK DYNAMITE Black Dynamite is a pitch-perfect revival of blaxploitation, complete with bad dudes, a superbad hero and a stone cold soundtrack (truly great and put together by the folks at Wax Poetics). Dig?

Angelika Film Center // 18 W Houston St, Manhattan // 11.30a, 1.30p, 3.45p, 5.45p, 8p, 10.05p // $12.50 // more info // directions

Monday October 19
IN CONVERSATION WITH JOHN CALE John Cale, one of the founders of The Velvet Underground whose creations have always been considered relevant in the art and music worlds, is speaking tonight at the MoMA about the relationship between art and music as part of the great, ongoing Looking at Music: Side 2 series at the museum.

MoMA // 11 W 53rd St, Manhattan // 7p // $TBA // more info // directions

Ten Years of Nonsense | New Release New York 10.06.09

New Release New York 10.06.09

This Week: Ten Years of Nonsense

Tuesday October 06
Lipsynch LIPSYNCH Since we starting going six years ago, the Next Wave Festival at BAM has been one of our favorite cultural events in New York. They always take chances with what they program, and we’ve never walked away from a performance disappointed, whether it was nouveau cirque, modern dance, Shakespeare, a collaboration with an indie rock band and a film-maker, or straight-up theater. The first show of this season, a theater piece called Lipsynch, is running now; and it’s as ambitious a production as ever.

A multi-layered, multi-plotted piece of theater clocking in at nine hours, Lipsynch uses the human voice as the major metaphor aligning the fragmented stories in the epic work. If you want to do it all in one go, you’ll have to wait for the weekend; but if breaking it into three two-and-a-half hour chunks seems more palatable, tonight’s the night to start.

BAM Harvey Theater // 651 Fulton St, Brooklyn // 7.30p // tickets range from $15 to $150 depending on how many nights you attend, whether you see the show all in one go, and, of course, where you sit // more info // directions

Wednesday October 07
Disco Files DISCO FILES Vince Aletti was a writer who in 1973, before anyone else had widely documented the movement, put ink to paper for Rolling Stone on the subject of disco. From that point forward, he was the journalist who watched its evolution most closely, weekly reporting for a magazine called Record World on the clubs and records that were central to disco culture. DJhistory.com has just released a book of all Aletti’s disco writing from 1973 to 1978, and to celebrate, Tony Smith and Danny Krivit, two DJs who know a thing or two about disco themselves, are playing records from the era.

Santos Party House // 96 Lafayette St, Manhattan // 9p // $5 in advance or $10 at the door // directions

Thursday October 08
Metropolis with Live Music METROPOLIS WITH LIVE MUSIC In 1927, supposedly inspired by a trip to New York City, Austrian-German-American filmmaker Fritz Lang created the most influential sci-fi work (and some say even most influential film, period) of the silent era. Metropolis was an enormous feat to accomplish, with giant sets, scenes with large choreographed marches, ambitious special effects and even human-to-robot transmogrification. For years the film has only been shown in edited versions due to poor print quality, but tonight, at the Queens Theatre in the Park, a full, newly restored version is being screened. And with a live score to boot.

Queens Theater in the Park // in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, directly beside the Queens Museum, Queens // 7.30p // $10 // more info // directions

Friday October 09
Chelsea on the Rocks CHELSEA ON THE ROCKS Abel Ferrara’s new documentary on the infamous Hotel Chelsea, where Sid supposedly killed Nancy and where Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Edith Piaf and hosts of others took up residence through the years, is opening at Cinema Village today. It focuses not only on the hotel’s history but also on the recent ousting of its long-time manager, Stanley Bard, who let tenants go months without paying rent in the name of letting them see their artistic endeavors through.

Cinema Village // 22 E 12th St, Manhattan // 5.20p and 9.55p // $11 // more info // directions

Saturday October 10
Nonsense 10 NONSENSE 10 Nonsense is Jeff Stark’s weekly email list about underground happenings, apartments for rent, ways to help, and other thoroughly helpful and entertaining things in New York. Really, though, it’s much more than that. Jeff’s list is a compendium of a creative city that is alive and well, a city that we continue to fall in love with no matter how long we’ve been here and no matter what good things we’ve seen come and go. There’s a lot of talk about New York’s good old days; but Nonsense is a weekly reminder that New York is breathing and full of wonder and that the best it has to offer is right here and right now, not behind us.

Now Nonsense is turning ten, and in the spirit of looking forward, Jeff has asked regular contributors to the list to present their visions for the next ten years. Folks like $mall ¢hange, Mean Red, Madagascar Institute, Winkel and Balktick, The Danger, Newmindspace and us have made posters of events yet to come, and they’ll be on display in the newly opened second floor of 3rd Ward. Later in the evening, impromptu performances will erupt simultaneously in different parts of the space, and finally it’ll all get capped off with a big dance party.

Congratulations, Nonsense. We really love you.

3rd Ward // 195 Morgan Ave, Brooklyn // 7p – late // $10 // more info // directions

Sunday October 11
Terry Riley and Gyan Riley TERRY RILEY AND GYAN RILEY Terry Riley is a lauded minimalist composer who continues to be prolific in performance and composition even now at the age of 74. He is an early user of tape loops, has been an inspiration to other seminal minimalist composers Steve Reich, John Adams and Phillip Glass, and is a master in raga. Tonight he’s playing with another Riley, his son, a guitarist and composer named Gyan.

Le Poisson Rouge // 158 Bleecker St, Manhattan // 7.30p // $20 in advance or $22 at the door // more info // directions

Monday October 12
Holiday HOLIDAY The banks have the day off. You should, too. Call in sick. Wake up, and eat breakfast late. Drive upstate. Watch a movie in your underwear. You deserve it.

Mister Saturday Night Loft, Sunday Best and Marilyn Monroe on a Monday

This Week: Mister Saturday Night Loft, Sunday Best and Marilyn Monroe on a Monday

Tuesday September 29
Silk and Bamboo SILK AND BAMBOO Historically speaking there are few cultures in the world that have taken music as seriously as the Chinese. For the past 8,000 years, they’ve been documenting their musical heritage, preserving instruments, creating visual art that shows music in action and painstakingly passing down their traditions. From now until early February, about sixty pieces illustrating their music’s history are on display at The Met.

Metropolitan Museum of Art // 1000 5th Ave, Manhattan // 9.30a – 5p // suggested donation of $20 for adults and $10 for students, but you can pay what you’d like // more info // directions

Wednesday September 30
Essie Jain ESSIE JAIN Essie Jain is a young, English singer and songwriter living in Brooklyn and forging forward on a path left behind by Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez. She’s not just another dot in the freak folk scene, though. Jain’s music is wrought from the same strong metals as her foremothers’, and her voice is a force.

Union Hall // 702 Union St, Brooklyn // 7.30p // $8 // more info // directions

Thursday October 01
Pino Daniele PINO DANIELE Italy’s best exports have never really included music, but Pino Daniele, an Italian guitarist and singer, has stood in glaring contrast to his mostly schmaltzy peers for over thirty years now. Like any of our own musical legends, he’s had his dalliances into less than exciting territory, but his classic albums from the late 70s and early 80s (check this video of him performing his song ‘A Me Me Piace ‘O Blues’ live in ’82) and his collaborations with the likes of Wayne Shorter, Richie Havens and King Crimson member Mel Collins, make him an essential figure. Tonight, incredibly for the first time ever, he’s playing New York. And at the Apollo no less!

The Apollo Theater // 253 W 125th St, Manhattan // 8p // $43.50 – $73.50 // more info // directions

Friday October 02
Micachu and the Shapes MICACHU AND THE SHAPES Micachu and the Shapes’ shows are convulsive, their songs catchy and unpredictable and their personalities adorable. For example: Calculator Live.

Littlefield // 622 Degraw, Brooklyn // 8p // $15 // more info // directions

Saturday October 03
Mister Saturday Night Presents Dixon MISTER SATURDAY NIGHT PRESENTS DIXON AT A LOFT After a summer off, Mister Saturday Night is back for the fall with a great guest in Mister Steffen Berkhan, also known as Dixon. Dixon has been consistently climbing to the top of the dance music world for the past couple years, and his ascension is no surprise: ever since he released his mix for Get Physical’s Body Language series, it’s been evident that he has a musical ear, shattering any preconceived notions about what a house DJ should sound like.

His label, Innervisions, which was co-founded with Ame off the back of his now gone residency at Weekend in Berlin, has released some of the biggest tracks in the 2000s. Of course residents Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin will be playing as well, and the disco ball will be spinning from the ceiling of Todd P’s Brooklyn loft until the sun comes up.

Market Hotel // 1142 Myrtle Ave, Brooklyn // $20 at the door, $15 with RSVP to mister@mistersaturdaynight.com // tickets available in advance at residentadvisor.net/mistersaturdaynight // midnight – late // more info // directions

Sunday October 04
Sunday Best with Morgan Geist SUNDAY BEST WITH MORGAN GEIST Sunday Best starts up as a monthly for the fall today at The Bell House. The space is homey, like a nice English neighborhood pub with sunshine blasting through the windows. Of course the Sunday Best staples of good music, good food (courtesy of Margarita Hernandez, who made huaraches and tacos at BKLYN Yard all summer) and a great vibe are in tow as well. For the first edition of the monthly, Morgan Geist will play with residents Doug Singer and Eamon Harkin.

One half of Metro Area, the duo that brought disco back to the forefront in New York in the early aughts, Morgan is the man behind Environ Records and a solo producer that’s prolific. This year’s Double Night Time was full of elements that made Metro Area great but full of very personalized nods to Chicago house and Steely Dan. Altogether, it’s almost certainly going to be The Best.

The Bell House // 149 7th Street, Brooklyn // 3p – 9p // $8 before 4p with RSVP to rsvp@sundaybestnyc.com or $10 otherwise // more info // directions

Monday October 05
Some Like It Hot SOME LIKE IT HOT Billy Wilder’s classic musical film, Some Like It Hot, is fifty years old, and Film Forum is celebrating with a week of screenings. No matter how many times you’ve seen the musical film, watching the lovely Marilyn Monroe (she keeps getting better as we get older) carousing with Tony Curtis and Jack Lemon in drag on the big screen is a thing worth doing.

Film Forum // 209 W Houston, Manhattan // 2p, 4.30p, 7p, 9p // $11 // more info // directions

NEW RELEASE :: 09.22.09 Edition | This Week: 25¢ Bourbon, David Byrne and Psychedelics

NEW RELEASE :: 09.22.09 Edition
This Week: 25¢ Bourbon, David Byrne and Psychedelics

Tuesday, September 22:
DAVID BYRNE: BICYCLE DIARIES It’s not rare to see David Byrne riding a bike around New York; and because of his celebrity and the rising popularity of cycling as an alternative to driving (thank goodness!), he’s become something of a spokesperson for two-wheeled culture. Tonight he’s celebrating the release of his new book, Bicycle Diaries–a collection of musings that he’s jotted while cruising around different towns on his portable, fold-up bike–by inviting fellow bikers Paul Steely White of Transportation Alternatives and Janette Sadik-Khan from the NYC Department of Transportation to chat about New York’s current and future relationship to bicycles.

Barnes and Noble, Union Square // 33 Union Square N, Manhattan // 7p // free // more info // directions

also… Speaking of free events with excellent artists, filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen will be at the Apple Store in Soho this evening at 6p.

Wednesday, September 23:
BOURBON AND BLUEGRASS In south Brooklyn every Wednesday, in a homey spot called Ellis Bar, a little mountain magic happens courtesy of bluegrass and 25¢ bourbon. We don’t know how they can afford to do it, but we’re happy they can. Fingerpickin’ always sounds better after a few.

Ellis Bar // 627 5th Ave, Brooklyn // Bluegrass at 9p and 25¢ bourbon is all day // free // more info // directions

Thursday, September 24:
PHOENIX If you don’t have tickets to Phoenix’s shows in Central Park this weekend, try to elbow your way into the Apple Store this evening. The effort will be worth it. The Versailles friends have been working on their pristine rock together since they were boys, and their show is tight to prove it.

Apple Store, Soho // 103 Prince St, Manhattan // 8.30p // free // directions

Friday, September 25:
GONZALES WITH JAMIE LIDELL Gonzales is a rapper, piano player and songwriter from Canada, who runs in the same circle as Feist, Jamie Lidell and Mocky. His album, Solo Piano, from 2005, is an all-time favorite of ours. Epochs away from his off-the-wall, campy hip hop, Gonzales’ piano pieces are still playful, but they’re stoked with emotion. Here’s a little clip from a live show. Tonight he’s playing with special guest appearances from Andrew WK and Jamie Lidell.

Joe’s Pub // 425 Lafayette St, Manhattan // 10p and midnight // $15 // more info // directionsalso… The tickets for Pavement’s reunion, which is happening a year from now, go on sale this morning at 10.

Saturday, September 26:
MOMA MIXX WITH HERCULES AND LOVE AFFAIR MoMA MiXX is a benefit for MoMA that takes visual artists connected with the museum and puts them alongside Justin Carter, Eamon Harkin, and a special guest DJ. The visual artists select music early in the event, giving insight into what inspires them. Afterward, Harkin, Carter and the guest turn the night into a dance party. It’s all fueled by an open bar (including the always art-friendly absinthe).

Tonight’s guests are Mickalene Thomas and Derrick Adams, New York-based contemporary visual artists, and Hercules and Love Affair’s Andy Butler, a long-time downtown DJ who spent years quietly concocting 2008′s massive, self-titled release for DFA and Mute. His sets are filled with all the influences that make Hercules great: Chicago house, disco and new wave.

note. We know this is a lot of money for a party. We do have one pair of tickets to giveaway, though. Just go to the New Release site, and click on the TICKET GIVEAWAY link in this listing.

MoMA // 11 W 53rd St, Manhattan // 8p – midnight // $75 including admission and open bar // more info // directions

also… If you’re interested in something on the cheaper end of things, Eamon and Justin are DJing late-night on that fabled ferryboat in Bushwick. If you want to come, the password is ‘Mars’. Check here for more info.

Sunday, September 27:
HORIZONS As we’re a music publication, we thought it fitting to list this, the last day of a forum on psychedelics–drugs inextricably linked to the creation (and often the enjoyment) of a lot really great music. The organizers of the event have lined up an impressive group of medical doctors, PhDs and authors to talk about the drugs’ relationship to medicine, culture, history, spirituality and art.

Judson Memorial Church // 55 Washington Square South, Manhattan // 2p – 6p // $30 for the day, $50 for the weekend, and limited $30 for folks who have economic hardships or are students // more info // directions

Monday, September 28:
FEVER RAY Fever Ray is half of The Knife. And if the live show is half as good as the gently grinding, Siouxsie-inspired full-length from earlier this year, it will be awesome.

note. If this one sells out, there’s another performance tomorrow night.

Webster Hall // 125 E 11th St, Manhattan // 8p // $33 in advance or $35 at the door // more info // directions

New Languages and Lemonade | New Release Edition 09.15.09

New Languages and Lemonade | New Release Edition 09.15.09

This Week: New Languages and Lemonade

Tuesday September 15
Deerhoof DEERHOOF If you didn’t get to catch Deerhoof at All Tomorrow’s Parties over the weekend, tonight’s the night. It’s been almost a year since the San Francisco foursome released Offend Maggie, their most recent offering of oddball indie rock, and they haven’t played New York since late October of last year. Their explosively spastic, childlike and virtuosic performances are not to be missed. Here’s a funny music video from two albums ago to get you in the spirit.

Le Poisson Rouge // 158 Bleecker St, Manhattan // 8p // $15 // more info // directions

Wednesday September 16
The New Deal Dinner Club THE NEW DEAL DINNER CLUB The New Deal is a reasonably priced, all raw food supper club that sneaks around the city and often features musical performances during dinner. Tonight’s meal is about new takes on North African dishes (habanero harissa!), and the musical guest is a gent named Barrett Lindgren. As you might have been able to gather from the name, Lindgren is not from Morocco; he is from western Pennsylvania. His music is nice, though: simple Americana with whistling, banjos and fingerpicked guitars.

Bridge Vineyards // 20 Broadway, Brooklyn // 7.30p // $28 in advance or $35 at the door includes dinner, drinks and performance // more info // directions

Thursday September 17
Aretha Franklin ARETHA FRANKLIN We had the chance, but we never saw James Brown; we never saw Michael Jackson; and we never saw Nina Simone. We’re not going to miss the opportunity to see Aretha Franklin.

Radio City Music Hall // 1260 6th Ave, Manhattan // 8p // $54.50 – $94.50 // more info // directions

Friday September 18
Lemonade LEMONADE Lemonade is one of a small flurry of Brooklyn bands that’s recently taken the baton from Animal Collective and El Guincho and run it into something quite their own. With effect-laden vocals and guitars layered thick from the former, the neo-tropical pulse of the latter, and a bit of straight-up Chicago beats and punk-funk bass; they’ve got a good thing going. This show is at a new space where Todd P is doing things, and it’s said to be nice.

171 Lombardy St, Brooklyn // 8p // $8 // more info // directions

Saturday September 19
New Languages Festival NEW LANGUAGES FESTIVAL The New Languages Festival, now in its 5th year, calls itself a jazz festival. Really, it’s much more than that. Where most jazz festivals in New York will only showcase acts who fit into specific, known connotations of jazz, New Languages rounds their bill with elsewhere unseen diversity. Take tonight’s lineup for example.

The first two acts, Brandon Ross and Bill McHenry show the festival’s breadth in the jazz scene, with Ross making banjo and guitar-led free jazz you might expect to catch at The Vision Festival, and McHenry, a tenor saxophonist, making music very much in the post-bop vein you might expect to hear at the JVC Jazz Fest. The third act, Jessica 6, is an adventurous leap into dance music and gothic pop, a band fronted by Nomi, who is also the front-woman for Hercules and Love Affair. Even with its wide scope, there’s still continuity in each act’s quality and skill. We’re impressed.

note. The festival run from September 17 – 26 and features far too many artists to list here. Check the more info link below.

McCarren Hall // 98 Bayard St, Brooklyn // 8.30p // $10 // more info // directions

Sunday September 20
Marlena Shaw MARLENA SHAW Marlena Shaw first appeared onstage at ten-years-old with her uncle, jazz trumpet player Jimmy Burgess, at the Apollo. Fame, however, took a long time to come. It wasn’t until after Shaw had given birth to five children that she got her deal with Chess Records in 1967. From then on, though, it was non-stop. From California Soul in 1969, to this widely sampled live performance in 1973, and up through today she’s been recording and touring consistently. A vocalist in the same league as Aretha Franklin, she’s another living legend who also shouldn’t be missed.

Dizzy’s Club // 33 W 60th St, Manhattan // 7.30p and 9.30p // $30 – $35 or $15 with a student ID // more info // directions

Monday September 21
Taxi Driver TAXI DRIVER Martin Scorsese’s film about a cab-driving Vietnam veteran gone mad is screening tonight in conjunction with MoMA’s Looking at Music: Side 2 exhibition, which contains art pieces, videos and relics from and of Sonic Youth, Talking Heads, Richard Hell, Jean-Michel Basquiat and quite a few others.

MoMA // 11 W 53rd St, Manhattan // 7p // $10 // more info // directions
