This extra special celebration will also include a live set by Scott Hardkiss & the Technicolor Dreamer Band. Check your realities at the door and come celebrate surrealist nightlife with Scott Hardkiss and friends.
The evening will kick off with funktastic sets by DJ Phunkae (Real Hype Records) & The Prophetz to get the dance floor primed for Scott and his Technicolor Dreamer band, who will then hit the stage for a rare live performance. Scott will once again be joined by his all-star crew, including Britta Philips (Dean & Britta/ Luna), Lisa Shaw (Naked Music/ Salted), Stevvi Alexander, Bobby Harden, J Bowman (Michael Franti/ Spearhead), A Guy Called Guy, and joining the group for this incredible night is drummer extraordinaire Guy Licata (Santigold/ Hercules & Love Affair). This Week: Singing Black Holes and Music For The Bear
Tuesday October 13
SINGING BLACK HOLES The Secret Science Club is talking about music from outer space this evening. Astrophysicist Janna Levin has an idea, summed up in this tidbit from the Secret Science blog: “When two spinning black holes orbit each other, engaging in an invisible pas de deux, they create gravitational waves—essentially ripples in the fabric of space-time—that cause the cosmos to ‘ring like a drum.’” We want to know what that sounds like.

THE DODOS Just about a month ago, The Dodos, a great band from San Francisco, came out with Time To Die. Their first album since their breakthrough, Visiter, (and their third album overall). It sticks to their original formula of polyrhythmic drums, finger-picked guitar, full throated vocals and no bass, but it’s by no means stale. Their sound is clearer than ever, with real focus on thick, rich tones; and they’ve added vibraphone (we’re feeling the vibes) to the mix.
note. Just before we went to print, this show sold out. You can still catch The Dodos at the Williamsburg Music Hall the night before, Tuesday, October 13.

BONK! It’s a big get-together of marching brass bands from New York, Chicago, Seattle and even Rome. Hungry March Band, a group called the Pink Puffers (those are the Romans), and our favorite, The Stumblebum Brass Band, are all taking part. Starting with a big, secret location parade today and going all the way through Monday, they’ll be leading marches and pub crawls through the streets of Brooklyn and Manhattan, onto ferries, into New Jersey bowling alleys and who knows where else. Get out those shimmying jazz hands and drinking hats.
Check the BONK! website for the starting location of today’s parade // 6p // free // more info

NO AGE SCORES THE BEAR The Bear is Jean-Jacques Annaud’s film about a young, orphaned grizzly who’s taken under the wing of an older male bear as they’re hunted through the wilds of British Columbia. We saw it when we were seven-years-old and still have vivid memories of its near dialogue-less scenes. Los Angeles lo-fi droners No Age have created their own score for the movie, and they’re performing it while it rolls in the New Museum’s theater.

THE WURST RECORD RELEASE The joke never gets old, and the records continue to be great tone-setters for the dancefloor. The Wurst label has another jam up its sleeve with Neurotic Drum Band’s “Neurotic Erotic Adventure”, and to celebrate they’re throwing a party. Label boss My Cousin Roy is playing alongside Ulysses and John Selway, the two gents behind the drum band, and Selway’s friend Abe Duque, who only last made an appearance in New York at our Beach Party in August, is dropping in to play as well.

BLACK DYNAMITE Black Dynamite is a pitch-perfect revival of blaxploitation, complete with bad dudes, a superbad hero and a stone cold soundtrack (truly great and put together by the folks at Wax Poetics). Dig?

Silk and Bamboo SILK AND BAMBOO Historically speaking there are few cultures in the world that have taken music as seriously as the Chinese. For the past 8,000 years, they’ve been documenting their musical heritage, preserving instruments, creating visual art that shows music in action and painstakingly passing down their traditions. From now until early February, about sixty pieces illustrating their music’s history are on display at The Met.
Metropolitan Museum of Art // 1000 5th Ave, Manhattan // 9.30a – 5p // suggested donation of $20 for adults and $10 for students, but you can pay what you’d like // more info // directions

Essie Jain ESSIE JAIN Essie Jain is a young, English singer and songwriter living in Brooklyn and forging forward on a path left behind by Joni Mitchell and Joan Baez. She’s not just another dot in the freak folk scene, though. Jain’s music is wrought from the same strong metals as her foremothers’, and her voice is a force.

Pino Daniele PINO DANIELE Italy’s best exports have never really included music, but Pino Daniele, an Italian guitarist and singer, has stood in glaring contrast to his mostly schmaltzy peers for over thirty years now. Like any of our own musical legends, he’s had his dalliances into less than exciting territory, but his classic albums from the late 70s and early 80s (check this video of him performing his song ‘A Me Me Piace ‘O Blues’ live in ’82) and his collaborations with the likes of Wayne Shorter, Richie Havens and King Crimson member Mel Collins, make him an essential figure. Tonight, incredibly for the first time ever, he’s playing New York. And at the Apollo no less!
The Apollo Theater // 253 W 125th St, Manhattan // 8p // $43.50 – $73.50 // more info // directions
Friday October 02
Micachu and the Shapes MICACHU AND THE SHAPES Micachu and the Shapes’ shows are convulsive, their songs catchy and unpredictable and their personalities adorable. For example: Calculator Live.

Mister Saturday Night Presents Dixon MISTER SATURDAY NIGHT PRESENTS DIXON AT A LOFT After a summer off, Mister Saturday Night is back for the fall with a great guest in Mister Steffen Berkhan, also known as Dixon. Dixon has been consistently climbing to the top of the dance music world for the past couple years, and his ascension is no surprise: ever since he released his mix for Get Physical’s Body Language series, it’s been evident that he has a musical ear, shattering any preconceived notions about what a house DJ should sound like.
His label, Innervisions, which was co-founded with Ame off the back of his now gone residency at Weekend in Berlin, has released some of the biggest tracks in the 2000s. Of course residents Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin will be playing as well, and the disco ball will be spinning from the ceiling of Todd P’s Brooklyn loft until the sun comes up.
Market Hotel // 1142 Myrtle Ave, Brooklyn // $20 at the door, $15 with RSVP to mister@mistersaturdaynight.com // tickets available in advance at residentadvisor.net/mistersaturdaynight // midnight – late // more info // directions
Sunday October 04
Sunday Best with Morgan Geist SUNDAY BEST WITH MORGAN GEIST Sunday Best starts up as a monthly for the fall today at The Bell House. The space is homey, like a nice English neighborhood pub with sunshine blasting through the windows. Of course the Sunday Best staples of good music, good food (courtesy of Margarita Hernandez, who made huaraches and tacos at BKLYN Yard all summer) and a great vibe are in tow as well. For the first edition of the monthly, Morgan Geist will play with residents Doug Singer and Eamon Harkin.
One half of Metro Area, the duo that brought disco back to the forefront in New York in the early aughts, Morgan is the man behind Environ Records and a solo producer that’s prolific. This year’s Double Night Time was full of elements that made Metro Area great but full of very personalized nods to Chicago house and Steely Dan. Altogether, it’s almost certainly going to be The Best.
The Bell House // 149 7th Street, Brooklyn // 3p – 9p // $8 before 4p with RSVP to rsvp@sundaybestnyc.com or $10 otherwise // more info // directions
Monday October 05
Some Like It Hot SOME LIKE IT HOT Billy Wilder’s classic musical film, Some Like It Hot, is fifty years old, and Film Forum is celebrating with a week of screenings. No matter how many times you’ve seen the musical film, watching the lovely Marilyn Monroe (she keeps getting better as we get older) carousing with Tony Curtis and Jack Lemon in drag on the big screen is a thing worth doing.
Film Forum // 209 W Houston, Manhattan // 2p, 4.30p, 7p, 9p // $11 // more info // directions
